Let your imagination run wild!

The Labyrinth Masquerade is a chance for you to explore your most outlandish and grand costuming desires.

Think sumptuous ball gowns, flowing cloaks, jaunty hats and of course the most wonderful masks you can create. Venetian, Medieval, Renaissance, Aristocratic, Imperial and High Fantasy costumes are all wonderful.

But don’t stop there!

Creature costumes are an excellent idea – particularly if you dress up as one of the inhabitants of the Labyrinth, or even other fantasy films such as Dark Crystal, Willow, Lord of the Rings or The Neverending Story.

Mythological creatures are great too, e.g. minotaurs, ancients gods, elemental spirits, etc.

Basically, GO NUTS!!. Put together the craziest costume you can.

The more extravagant you look, the more you’ll fit in.

PRIZES will be awarded for Best Mask, Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gentleman, voted by the guests.

This year we have the new The Hardcore Mask Award. This is a test of costumed endurance, rules will be explained on the night.

Check out our massive List of Costuming Resources. _________________________________________________________________________

Do I Need A Mask?

You need something on your face, whether it be a mask, face paint, glitter or something even more unusual.

Build a mask that’s right for you, and make it as comfortable as possible.

A good mask has:
  • Large eye holes - so that you physically cannot see your own mask when you are wearing it and no part of it sticks into your eyes.

  • A contoured nose - that takes pressure off the bridge of your nose and rests mostly on your upper check bones.

  • A secure method of tying it to your head - so that it doesn’t slip and slide around (very annoying when you’re trying to waltz with a good-looking stranger and your mask keeps falling all over your face). It should have at least a thick elastic band or two strips of stretch material to tie at the back of your head. Consider adding an extravagant hat to the look, or converting a baseball or similar to join to your face mask to make the whole thing easier to keep on your head and decorate, especially if you want to add ears, horns or a wreath.

  • A comfortable interior - a thin layer of foam, felt or soft cloth is much more comfortable than rough papier mache or sweaty plastic. Especially if you want to win the Hardcore Mask Award!

  • Lots of decoration! - Decorate your mask with as much stuff as you can, then decorate it some more! Your mask can never be crazy enough. Things to stick on could be ribbons, feathers, dimontes, strings of beads, sequins, flowers and leaves, and teddy bear fur. But why not go REALLY CRAZY with things like swizel sticks, butterflies, rubber insects or lizards, plastic spoons, twigs, toys and Jareth knows what else! The only rule here is BE CREATIVE!
Many shops sell ready-made masks or mask components such as craft shops, goth shops, bargain shops and of course Costume Shops. Check out our massive list of COSTUMING RESOURCES in Victoria.

Serious points to anyone who makes their own Mask.

Shoes – We strongly advise wearing good comfortable shoes in which you can dance all night. Thongs, sneakers and other drab and common footwear will be taken from you and thrown in the Oubliette. Ladies please avoid the temptation to wear high heel shoes as you may have trouble walking after several hours. Even strappy open-toed shoes should be avoided if possible as they are rather informal and modern and inconsistent with the world of high fantasy and nouveax renaissance.

What If I Can’t Find A Costume?

If you absolutely can’t find a costume – formal wear and tuxedos are acceptable. Don’t try to turn up in regular street clothes or we will turn the Goblins on you. Alternately, you could always try turning up in your underwear (it will be the middle of winter, but you may be bought a few drinks once you arrive.)

Can I Change Into My Costume At The Regal Ballroom?

Grrrr... we strongly advise against it, for a few reasons.

1) It spoils the atmosphere of the evening if people are running around in normal street clothes inside the venue

2) The Security Guards are instructed to keep anyone not in costume out of the Masquerade, to prevent crashing

3) It makes our lovely Door Maitre D's jobs harder when trying to keep track of everyone.

If you have no choice but to get dressed at the venue you can either go a few doors down to a local bar and get dressed there, thus ensuring your grand entrance at the Masquerade, get dressed in your car (if you're a skilled contortionist), or turn up dead on 7pm and beg admittance to the bathrooms, which are inside the foyer to the far left and right of the ballroom main door. Please do not try to enter earlier than 7pm as this creates all sorts of organisational and legal headaches for those who are trying to complete preparations of the venue for the 7pm opening.

How Much Is The Cloak Room?

Only $1. Pay a coin to the friendly Cloak Room Guard and he'll personally keep all your bits and pieces safe for the duration of your stay.

What Will The Weather Be Like On The Night?

Cold. Bank on it. Middle of winter in Melbourne drops down to 0 degrees without any trouble. It actually snowed in the city a few years back. We advise wearing thick overcoats until you get to the Masquerade then place them in the secure Cloak Room for $1 along with your bags. Melbourne winters have been very dry in recent years but rain does happen so keep your unbrella handy on the night. Melbourne is also a fairly windy city so if your costume has any delicate pieces you may like to keep them safe until you get to the Masquerade and attach them there.
